Pass-a-Grille Beach offers flat, calm Gulf waters that are ideal for open-water swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. This historic stretch features an uninterrupted dune system anchored by sea oats rather than high-rises. Paddleboarders should launch from the 11th Avenue beach access early in the morning before the sea breeze kicks up. It is the best spot to glide alongside passing bottlenose dolphins.
Where the Horizon Opens
Sand Key Park is a 95-acre park where visitors can walk paved trails and explore a rich salt marsh ecosystem. Birdwatchers frequently spot herons and anhingas near the boardwalks, while sea turtles nest on the wide beach from May through October. For the best views of passing sailboats, walk to the northern tip where the park meets Clearwater Pass.
Trails Across the Keys
Fort De Soto Park spans 1,136 acres across five interconnected islands, offering over seven miles of paved multi-use paths for cyclists and hikers. You can hike through shady coastal hammocks or explore the historic coquina-shell fortifications built during the Spanish-American War. Rent a kayak near the park entrance to explore the quiet mangrove lagoons where manatees feed.
Merry Pier is an active, historic wooden pier in Boca Ciega Bay where you can cast for snook, redfish, and snapper. Anglers of all skill levels line the wooden rails daily, sharing space with patient brown pelicans. Drop by the bait shop on-site to buy live shrimp, and fish the incoming tide for the best chance at a catch.
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve features six miles of deeply shaded trails and swamp boardwalks running along the edge of Lake Maggiore. Hiking through this 245-acre upland scrub ecosystem offers sightings of gopher tortoises, alligators, and nesting birds of prey. Start your hike on the Swamp Maple Trail early in the morning to see the lake mist clear.
Under the Canopy
Sawgrass Lake Park features a mile-long elevated boardwalk that allows hikers to walk safely through one of the region’s largest maple swamps. This 400-acre preserve offers near-guaranteed sightings of alligators and turtles from the main observation tower. Newcomers should transition to the unpaved, half-mile Hammock Trail for a rugged walk under ancient live oaks.
Sleep Beside the Bayou
Fort De Soto Campground offers 238 heavily shaded campsites nestled in a coastal hammock along the edge of Mullet Key Bayou. Campers can launch kayaks directly from the waterfront sites or cast for redfish at sunrise. Book your site in loop one or two several months in advance to secure a spot with direct water access.
Mangrove Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole championship municipal course built alongside native mangrove estuaries. Golfers here share the fairways with active coastal wildlife, including hunting ospreys and wading herons. To experience the quietest round and avoid the midday heat, book a tee time before eight in the morning when the coastal breeze is light.
